Lot 505
CILICIA. Pompeiopolis. Pseudo-autonomous issue. Diassarion (Bronze, 27 mm, 8.32 g, 12 h), late 1st century BC to 1st century AD. AN Diademed head of Pompey 'the Great' to right. Rev. ΠΟΜΠHIΩΠΩ[...] Nike advancing right, holding wreath in her right hand and palm frond her left shoulder; in field to left, monogram of ΠA; in field to right, OCZ (?). RPC I -. SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Levante -. SNG Paris -. SNG PFPS -. SNG von Aulock -. Unpublished and unique. A beautifully struck coin with a very attractive portrait of Pompey 'the Great'. About extremely fine.

The significance of the letters and monograms on the early Provincial coinage of Pompeiopolis is often unclear: sometimes these are dates, but we frequently do not understand their meaning. It is possible that AN on the obverse is to be read as year 51, which would date the coin to 16/5 or 15/4 BC, as the era of the city started in 67/6 or 66/5 BC, but this is far from being certain
